“I-! I will find my brother no matter what!” Shouted Ai. She was standing in front of a memorial shrine. “I will…- I will right?” Her face had gone red from crying too much. The man standing next to her patted her head with affection.
“I’m sorry, little girl…” Despite his best efforts, Jia Feng couldn’t find the right words to console Ai. The problem was not with Jia Feng. It was the fact that Ai was a 7-years-old with not a single family member left. There were no words that could console her. Her brother who had been taking care of her all this time had been suddenly murdered by her drug addict, abusive father.
Jia Feng left Ai with her brother’s memorial shrine and left the room.
“So? Who’ll take care of her?” Asked an old man with glasses. “I would do so but I already have a child that I need to look after.”
“You shameless geezer! Your son is already 25 this year and has a full-time job. If you don’t want to, just say so!” Another person said. This time, she was a middle-aged woman. “I may not be taking her in but it’s because I have a daughter of the same age. I can’t deal with two at once right?”
These people were the relatives of Song Lei.
Jia Feng furrowed his brows. These shameless people were trying to show off by passing around a 7-years-old orphan’s custody.
“I will be taking her in.” Jia Feng said.
“Who is this person?” A woman whispered to the person next to her.
“He is Jia Feng, he has been taking care of Lei and Ai for a long time. He lives alone,” answered the person while also whispering.
“Is it really okay for him to take the girl in?” The woman asked again.
“I think that there is no problem. Are you going to take her custody in his place? Hm..? No? Then shut your mouth.”
Jia Feng crossed his arms and looked at the other people in the room. “So? Does anyone have a problem with that?”
“No! Bro Jia Feng is really benevolent!” the man with glasses said while smiling.
Jia Feng didn’t say another word and left the house. It was raining outside. He took out a lighter and a cigarette from his pocket.
“Can I use your lighter?” A man wearing a grey long-down coat and holding an umbrella asked.
Jia Feng looked at his face for a second and threw the lighter at him. “Who are you?” He asked.
“I’m Liu Kun,” said the man while trying to light his cigarette up.
“I’m Jia Feng…” Said Jia Feng while taking the lighter back from Liu Kun. “So? Why is a classy man like you in a rundown place like this?”
“Not much,” Liu Kun said with a smile on his face. “I’m just investigating some things…”
“Like what?” Jia Feng asked. He was becoming more and more suspicious. This man wearing expensive clothes looked incredibly out of place in these slums.
“It isn’t something that a person like you should know,” said Liu Kun while keeping the creepy smile on his face.
Jia Feng looked at Liu Kun’s face dumbfoundedly for some time and then giggled to himself. He slowly leaned on a neatly arranged stack of bricks. Although he was a bit angry, he didn’t let it show on his face.
“Is that so? Then you wouldn’t mind me calling the police am I right?” Jia Feng said while smirking.
“Uhh…” Liu Kun frowned for a bit. “That would be a problem. I don’t want to deal with the police. My boss would get very angry.”
“Then tell me why you’re here and I won’t pursue it further,” demanded Jia Feng.
“Have you ever heard of the new world..?”
…
‘Who dares to make me use my divine talisman?!’ Song Lei shouted in his mind. He didn’t dare to do so out loud. The Buddhist monk was seemingly in a trance and Song Lei didn’t want to get noticed. He started slowly sneaking up to the monk.
*Creak
Song Lei took a few steps back in the span of a second and swung the cursed knife in his hand.
*Clank!
Someone that was hiding behind the wall had jumped out and attacked Song Lei. This person was holding a small dagger in his hand. Unlike Song Lei’s shabby-looking cursed knife, this dagger looked like the real deal.
The person with the dagger stepped up and hacked at Song Lei without saying anything. Song Lei held the door frame with his hand to push himself and bent backward. He could feel the dagger cutting the air while making a sharp sound. His heart jumped in excitement and horror.
Initially, Song Lei was sad that he had to spend his points on the body stat. But now, he was actually glad. If he hadn’t spent those points back then, he would have 2 new holes in his body by now.
Song Lei quickly responded by hitting the man’s wrist with the cursed knife’s handle. The man shrieked for a second and quickly backed off while holding his wrist. He had dropped the dagger. It seemed like Song Lei’s attack had made a lot of damage.
Song Lei didn’t want to lose the momentum he had just created so he quickly followed the man’s steps and threw out a punch. The man sneered at Song Lei’s clumsy punch and tilted his head. Song Lei’s punch missed the man’s face by a little margin. Song Lei lost his balance and stumbled. The man took advantage of this mistake and hugged Song Lei with one of his arms. With his other hand, he started punching Song Lei in the liver.
Song Lei felt his eyes getting hazy. He was losing his focus and felt like he couldn’t breathe anymore.
‘Fuck! I may die if I keep getting punched liked this!’ Song Lei thought. The liver was the largest gland organ in the body. As long as he kept being punched there, he would eventually lose his ability to fight. In the worst-case scenario, his liver might rupture and he would die of internal bleeding.
Song Lei quickly held the man’s punch and headbutted him. The man stepped back a little while holding his nose. His nose was broken and bleeding. Song Lei rushed ahead and slammed the man to the wall while grabbing his neck. The man was shaken by Song Lei’s arm strength. Although Song Lei looked to be the same weight class as him, his brute force was on another level.
And the most shocking part about Song Lei was not this. It was his inhuman reaction speed. The man couldn’t even comprehend how this seemingly weak guy could match up to his speed. He had a speed-enhancing type ability. A normal person couldn’t react to his moves at all.
‘Maybe this newbie has a speed-enhancing type ability too?’ he thought to himself.
Song Lei kept slamming the man to the wall again and again. When he finally realized that the man was not moving anymore, he quickly turned to the monk who was still sitting calmly.
“Ugh…”
Song Lei felt his head going dizzy and fell to his knees….
