Chapter 29 - Secrets

“What are you doing here?!” Liu Ye called out in worry as he put a gun in the back of his pants and rushed to Zhenzhen’s side. “It’s dangerous here.”

Although she looked scared, she didn’t reject Liu Ye’s embrace which was her only safe place.

“Big Bro, what happened here?” Zhenzhen questioned while looking up at him. “Are you injured?”

She tried to check his body for any wounds before he even replied but Liu Ye only covered her ears while pressing her against his chest.

Bang!

Zhenzhen jerked at the sound of another gunshot and Xu Yue came over. “We have to go.”

Liu Ye pulled Zhenzhen away and grabbed her face, forcing her to stare into his eyes.

“Listen to me. Those people were bad guys,” Liu Ye explained softly. “They tried to kill us, so we had to defend ourselves. I will tell you everything but we have to leave this place first. Okay?”

The sound of Police sirens was clear now as they tried to break through the traffic of cars. They would be on the site any moment.

“Mhmm, I trust you,” Zhenzhen nodded innocently and he picked her up, running after Xu Yue. He hated the fact she found out about his dark side but it was too late to change that.

The only thing that cheered him up was the fact they dropped her off before the attack took place. He didn’t know what he would do if anything happened to her.

“What about the driver?” Liu Ye questioned on the way as they reached the sidewalk. People immediately gave way to them as Xu Yue walked boldly with a gun in her hand.

“I left him on purpose. We need someone to talk to the Police and explain what happened,” Xu Yue replied simply. “I already clicked the emergency button in the car. My people should already be on the way to get— Speaking of the devil.”

Just as she mentioned it, they saw two black sedans approach from a distance before stopping right next to them. Multiple men in black suits stepped out with guns in their hands but Xu Yue immediately snapped at them. “Get back inside! We are leaving!”

“Zhenzhen, get inside,” Liu Ye said while assuring her. “Everything will be alright. We are in good hands now.”

She looked ultimately confused at what was happening but she listened to Liu Ye like a good girl.

“Zhenzhen, do you have a phone with you?” Xu Yue asked as she stripped off her vest. “I need to call my father but I left my own behind.”

“Here.” Zhenzhen passed the phone without hesitation, already somewhat calmed down. “Big Sis gave it to us anyway.”

“Don’t worry, I will return it in a second,” Xu Yue replied as she praised, “You are hanging well there. I know you have a lot of questions but you have to wait till we reach a safe place.”

“Mhmm…” Zhenzhen nodded softly before glancing down at Xu Yue’s pistol laying on the empty chair. Liu Ye was quick to notice that and covered it with his own bullet-proof vest.

“Zhenzhen, tell me how you got to the scene,” Liu Ye asked while pulling her chin to look at him. “Didn’t you enter into your Uni grounds?”

It would be hard to distract her from what happened so he wanted to at least help her understand.

“I did but then I heard a loud crash and everyone came out to check it out. When I saw it was Big Sis’s limousine, I immediately rushed to help,” Zhenzhen explained as she leaned on his shoulder. “But then, I heard gunshots… I was too scared to move…”

Zhenzhen shuddered as if remembering the scene but Liu Ye calmed her down, “It’s okay now… Your Big Bro is safe now… No one can take me away from you…”

“Mhmm… I thought you were the one getting shot, so I…” Zhenzhen paused, looking at Liu Ye as if scared to be scolded.

“Don’t worry. Nothing happened and that’s all that matters,” Liu Ye assured. “You are also old enough to know that rushing into a gunfight is not a good idea. I don’t need to remind you of that.”

“I was hiding but thinking that you could be hurt, I couldn’t sit and do nothing… I know I did wrong,” Zhenzhen explained with a sigh.

“Did you see me shoot?” Liu Ye asked an important question.

“Yes. You shot that man in the leg,” Zhenzhen nodded eagerly. “Big Bro looked cool, but then when you aimed to kill him…”

She couldn’t finish as Xu Yue’s call finally connected.

“Father.” Her tone was calm but Liu Ye could hear the nervousness in her voice.

Who wouldn’t? She was talking to the current leader of the Red Dragon Triad, a man that even the government is scared to touch.

“Yes, I am not hurt at all, just some scratches. Liu Ye is fine too.”

“Yes, we are heading back to the villa.”

“Okay, bye.”

The conversation was short and sounded normal, but based on Xu Yue’s expression, it was that simple.

“He is not happy, huh?” Liu Ye asked while already knowing the answer.

“Nope. We are screwed,” Xu Yue replied simply, passing the phone back to Zhenzhen. “We will get a proper scolding for sure.”

“We? I did nothing wrong. I performed my job perfectly,” Liu Ye corrected, washing his hands. “As long as you are not hurt, I’m good.”

Liu Ye turned to Zhenzhen and explained, “Everything that happened earlier was a part of my job. Xu Yue is a very important person that has a lot of enemies. I’m working as her bodyguard to protect her from danger.”

“So those people came to hurt Big Sis?” Zhenzhen asked curiously, cheering up after his explanation.

“Yes,” Liu Ye nodded without hesitation. “But don’t worry. Your Big Bro is very skilled and will protect her. I didn’t tell you about it because I didn’t want people to target you. Our lives are dangerous so I wanted you to live a normal life for as long as I could.”

He couldn’t tell her those men came after him or else she would not leave his side ever again. They only had each other in this world so both of them didn’t want to lose the other.

“Thank you,” Zhenzhen acknowledged with a hug before hitting him on the shoulder. “But I’m also mad at you that I didn’t know anything this whole time. I understand it’s confidential but you could have told me something.”

“Well, now you know everything. I will try not to hide too much from you,” Liu Ye assured, knowing very well he still had secrets he couldn’t share.

“Humph, you better,” Zhenzhen puffed as she threatened with her finger. “You didn’t tell me you have a girlfriend and now this. I can’t believe you were hiding so much from me.”

Liu Ye and Xu Yue froze, realizing there was one more thing they had to clarify.

“This… Will you tell her?” Xu Yue mentioned as she gazed at Liu Ye. Even though she wanted to be with him, it wasn’t the time to announce her plans to her family.

“Tell me what?” Zhenzhen questioned as she looked back and forth between them.

“That our relationship is a secret,” Liu Ye said directly. “If Xu Yue’s father finds out about us, he won’t let us be together. That’s why it’s important you don’t tell anyone.”

He was pained to continue with Xu Yue’s lie but it was still better than explaining the truth. She would raise too many questions for which he didn’t have an answer.

“Oh! Like in a movie! Don’t worry! I will not tell anyone!” Zhenzhen exclaimed with her eyes shining. “But I have a condition!”

In a quick moment, she forgot what just happened and get gossipy nature activated as she focused directly on them.

“What is it?”

Zhenzhen pursed her lips and demanded, “I will stay quiet but I don’t want you to restrain yourself in front of each other. I want to see the cute side of Big Bro as he spoils his girlfriend. Ahhh, can’t wait!”

Liu Ye’s heart sank while Xu Yue’s couldn’t contain her happiness. She jumped seats next to Zhenzhen and they continued to gossip around like best friends forever.

He immediately regretted not spilling everything but it was too late, the cars already reaching the Xu Residence.

“Whoa! Big Sis! You are rich rich!” Zhenzhen commented as they stopped in front of a large villa with beautiful gardens all around.

“Wait till you see the pool in the backyard,” Xu Yue teased. “We can swim after the meeting with my father.”

That one sentence sold Zhenzhen as she jumped in excitement.

“Miss, your father is awaiting you,” the butler informed as he opened the door to the house and then led them to the office. Liu Ye planned to have Zhenzhen wait outside but she held his arm tight, not wanting to leave his side.

The office was spacious with all furniture beautifully handcrafted but that wasn’t what drew their attention. It was the big screen behind the desk with a news station broadcasting live news. It wasn’t a surprise that Xu Yue’s face was pulled up on the screen.

“We have identified the person on the footage as Xu Yue, the well-known Heiress of the Red Dragon Triad. From what we gathered, their car was attacked by two armored trucks with twelve armed men. It was most probably an attempt to kidnap Miss Xu but it failed horribly. She and her bodyguard fought back against the attackers and gave them the taste of their medicine.”

Bang! Bang!

The sounds of shooting filled the office as a phone camera recorded Xu Yue shooting at the men, only needing one bullet for each person. The video was mostly blurred aside from Xu Yue’s cold face that was even zoomed in for more views.

Click.

The middle-aged man behind the chair paused the TV and finally turned around, looking solemnly at his daughter. He was about to speak when his gaze fell on the unknown person in the room.

“Who is she?”
