Chapter 17: The Real Beast Tamer

Li Fei stared suspiciously at Jiang He and asked doubtfully, “Why do I have the feeling that’s a load of crap?”

“You know nothing about the world of beast tamers.”

Jiang He honestly said. “Ever been to a circus? That’s how they train their animals—the ones who don’t listen are starved and beaten up, but they will be rewarded with the good stuff after a show. That’s how even the more ferocious beasts would be tamed.”

“There’s no way they won’t be tamed if you do that!” Li Fei retorted. “The untamed ones are literally beaten to death!”

“Alright, cut the crap.” Jiang He said with a lowered voice, looking around. “You should carry Su Ze back to Baitugang. I’m taking a look around the scenic route.”

“Aren’t the Ferals dealt with? Why would you go to the scenic route?”

But despite Li Fei’s own question, he had already walked up to Su Ze.

He exclaimed in surprise even as he dropped to a crouch. “But aren’t you being too heavy-handed, Old Jiang? The dude’s nose is broken and still bleeding even now.”

“It’s fine, rank-two martial artists aren’t that weak.” Jiang He replied, but before he finished, he could hear two loud slaps echoing beside his ear.

Scowling at Li Fei, he asked, “Why are you hitting him?”

“I’m waking him up! I’ve learnt some first-aid: if a person is unconscious, pinch their philtrum, but if that doesn’t work, give them a few good slaps!”

“…”

Jiang He was stunned.

‘You have superstrength. What’s wrong with carrying him back to the village with that endless power of yours?’

More importantly, thanks to Li Fei’s slaps, Su Ze was slowly opening his eyes, groaning.

His gaze looked lost, as if he was asking the most important questions in life:

Who am I?

Where am I?

Ouch!

Why does my nose hurt so much?

Su Ze touched the bridge of his nose just then, and the terrible agony jolted him from his muddleheaded state. He promptly leapt up like a koi, glaring coldly at Jiang He, growling, “How dare you backstab me?”

“I didn’t!”

Jiang He shrugged in return. “I knocked you out justly and honorably. How is that a backstabbing?”

“You have a death wish, don’t you!”

Su Ze’s feet moved. He strode forward with his Eight Trigams movement as he lunged at Jiang He, and even as he hung in the air, his fists were already in position, punching through the air loudly.

‘Is this a rank-two martial artist? Feels… so slow.”

On the other hand, Jiang He stood his ground. He had noticed that Su Ze’s movement and style was extremely slow in his perspective, and he knew then that was because he was of a higher level compared to Su Ze, not to mention that his spirit had developed by leaps and bounds after eating cucumbers for days now.

Clenching his own fist, he sent it forth.

‘This should hit him in the jaw.’

That was Jiang He thought would happen after observing Su Ze’s trail of movement and his own.

However…

Pow!

A dull thud.

Su Ze crashed straight into the ground from the air, twitched several times before becoming unconsciousness once again.

Jiang He looked at Su Ze under the moonlight then, and saw that his eye sockets were bruised.

He therefore shook his head in disappointment. “I have almost zero fighting experience. I heart that some combat prodigies who could anticipate their opponent’s moves and where they would strike even before they attacked… but I can’t. I intended to hit him in the jaw, only to hit him on his eye socket.”

“…”

Li Fei was speechless once again. “Jiang He, why did you knock him out again? I just woke him up—I can’t carry him back, can I? it’s over ten miles!”

He walked up to them again, before looking around and gritting his teeth viciously. “Should we just kill him, Jiang He? He’s not going to do nothing after you beat him up!”

“No need.”

Jiang He smiled faintly. “He’s just a piece of trash. If two punches aren’t enough to change his mind, I’ll just punch him a third time… Hold on, what are you doing?”

Seeing that Li Fei was about to start giving slaps again, Jiang He quickly stopped him, saying, “Can’t you just carry him back? And give me your weapon.”

“You’re not coming back?”

Li Fei asked even as he picked up Su Ze and held him beneath his armpit. “Jiang He, you’re just a beast tamer…”

“Get lost!”

Jiang He was speechless.

Was Two Dog Li a little thick-headed?

Jiang He had already shown his brute strength, and Li Fei was still worried about him?

Nonetheless, it was only after Two Dog Li left that Jiang He carried the metal pole with him and slowly headed for the nearby scenic route, his eyes carrying somberness.

According to Wang Siyu’s information, there was at least one rank-two Feral amongst the group that attacked Baitugang Village—but all the Ferals he killed so far were rank one.

Jiang He was naturally suspicious.

Eventually, he entered the scenic route.

Half a month ago, it was a place of scenery constructed with elegance. Now, it had long since become a mess, with the classical-style shacks bearing signs of the Ferals’ rampage: everything from the walls, doors and windows were blown apart.

Jiang He opened one of the doors and illuminated it with his phone’s flashlight.

Half of a corpse lay on the floor, with bite marks all over it.

“It seems that the workers in the whole scenic route are all killed…”

“But the revival of qi didn’t happen overnight. Shouldn’t the people here have expected it? Shouldn’t they have the time to call the police after running into the Ferals?”

After going one round over the mountaintop, he found four mangled corpses.

There was no assurance that the death toll was just four, however… from what was left of the four corpses, it wouldn’t be surprising that some humans were eaten whole.

“Could they have been attacked by Ferals at the same time?”

“That’s not right!”

“The corpses are all found in different places, and there are eight hundred meters separating the two furthest corpses. The Ferals I’ve killed aren’t that smart either… Unless those beasts planned the attack, these people would have time to get the police.

“And where is the rank-two Feral?”

“It’s not showing up yet!”

Even as Jiang He pondered, there was a rustle echoing behind him.

He quickly rushed towards the sound, only to find a black blur that vanished as soon as it appeared.

The black blur must have been a big black dog, and it was much larger than the ones Jiang He killed just now.

But more importantly, there was a figure seated on top of the dog.

Jiang He was intent on his pursuit, only to find that the dog was gone.

‘There’s someone behind the attacks on the Changliushui scenic route and Baitugang Village…’

A bold idea appeared in Jiang He’s head just then. ‘If that’s the case, does that person controls those Ferals? Could he be a real beast tamer?’
