Chapter 37 - The Last Mission

It was now the end of the spring. The weather was becoming hot as the summer was approaching. It was now the end of the semester and also the end of the cadet’s experience-gaining program.

Contrary to Kairen’s expectation, everything went just alright in the next few weeks. He did his missions pretty well without any flaws and errors every time. That made him himself surprised. He would stare at the ceiling at night wondering ‘How come I don’t mess up things these days?’ with a weird feeling. Everything was going so well that it felt suspicious.

Even Reyan and Serria were surprised at the fact that he was doing his job without making any fuss. Well, he surprised people with how he could kill monsters with simple spells and solve the problems easily, but it wasn’t something bad at all.

Serria went around saying “This isn’t right. Kairen isn’t Kairen if he doesn’t act as a proper Kairen.” and other stupid things to tease him. However, she would end up in a fight with Reyan instead most of the time. They didn’t need to be near each other in order to successfully create a situation to argue, three fights would be produced in their group chat every day without much hard work.

Kairen also tried his best to gather as much information about his past as possible. He was really busy these days so all he could do was asking his close friends about the past.

Kian was still on a mission. Kairen had last talked to him after they came back from the snowy mountain and he didn’t answer his calls or messages after that. Kairen was actually a little bit worried about him but there was nothing he could do.

He called Alessia a few times as well to ask if Kain was back or not, however, the phone was stolen from her every time. Ariyan would grab the phone and shout “UNNCLEEE, UNCLE” while running away from his mother.

‘This is actually cute.’ he thought every time to himself while listening to Ariyan’s excited shouts.

In the end, the information he could gather was little. He only knew of some of previous Kairen’s behaviors and habits. There were some small bits of information about him, gathered from his two friend’s memories.

‘He used to act older than his age often.’

While scribbling that down on the notebook, the car suddenly shook and a long line was drawn from one side to the other side of the notebook.

“Ah!”

The handwriting was awful in itself already and the line just added up to its poor state.

“I still feel like it’s kinda ridiculous to write down your previous behaviors in a notebook…”

Serria was leaning back at the car seat with crossed legs and looking at Kairen. Reyan, sitting in the front seat, glanced at them through the car’s mirror.

“It is wise to write it down I think, his memory can’t be trusted at all.”

“Ahem!”

Kairen closed the notebook and pushed it inside his backpack. He leaned to one side and looked out of the window. A tall building could be seen at the end of the road.

Today was the day they would do their last mission. The last mission is a little bit different from the previous ones, in this mission cadets can choose whom to be teammates with and where to go themselves. Also, the job they are going to do is not known until they arrive at their chosen location. It the last mission, cadets visit and work at the place they have sent their application forms to.

In Kairen’s case, he was in a team with Reyan and Serria, and the place he was going to visit was…

“We have arrived.”

Reyan exited the car while saying that, Kairen and Seriia followed suit.

“This way.”

Reyan took the lead and walked towards a huge door.

Behind the tall walls, a huge and luxurious building could be seen. It was a simple yet beautifully designed building. The building seemed to be in the middle of the vast yard. As they approached the door, they could see other small and medium-sized buildings in the yard as well.

The huge door was half-open. There were no guards there and no one asked for any identification cards from them. They walked into the yard, observing every corner of the place.

A huge yard with tall trees and spacious gardens was in front of them. The tall building was located in the middle of the yard, surrounded by smaller buildings from all sides.

“Wow!”

There was a symbol carved on the glasses on top of the building. A frozen sword stuck to the ground, surrounded by burning fire. It was a simple, yet well-known symbol. A name was engraved under the mark with large letters.

[Special Military Forces]

The three of them stood in front of the entrance and observed the area with excitement. They have come here to visit the place they wanted to get employed in the future.

“Are you three the cadets?”

Someone approached them while they were looking around like 3-year-old kids in a toy shop.

“Yes.”

“Can I check your ID and cadet verification cards?”

They handed their cards to the woman as asked and waited for her to check the information with the tablet in her hands. After a few minutes, the woman returned the cards and smiled at them.

“Hello, I am Dale Brayn. I will be your guard for today.”

“Nice to meet you.”

After greeting the woman in a super polite manner, they all followed her while listening to her explanations.

“As you all know, here is the main building of SMF. SMF has numerous branches all over the country and this place is in the center of all of them.”

They walked slowly while looking at the tall building.

“The other buildings you can see are all main buildings for different divisions and units of SMF. They work under the management of the unit’s leader, which all follow the orders of our commander.”

They walked past the other buildings and entered the main building. The interior of the building was large. People were moving here and there and doing their designed tasks. Everyone seemed too busy that no one even paid attention to them.

“Today, you will be witness to some of the workings of this place.”
