The sharp-eyed scouts were the first ones to exclaim in horror, and the other guards began buzzing amongst themselves right after. Most of them could vaguely make out a human silhouette amongst that ominous cloud-like clump in the sky, and it unnerved them.
On the other hand, Roel remained perfectly calm.
Time ticked by with the two pairs of eyes locked on each other. Indescribable nervousness and tension suffused the air. The guards who had regained their senses kept their vigilance up while Roel quietly waited for the enemy to make a move.
Flooding Death could be considered as a highly condensed mass of curses, a type of mana calamity unique to the Sia Continent. It could travel like tidal waves or fleeting clouds, depending on the form it decided to assume.
There were two reasons why Roel wasn’t making the first move. He didn’t want to confront the enemy in the sky, and he wanted to see what the latter was capable of.
From his previous encounters, he knew that the Six Calamities possessed sentience. In fact, that was the reason why Flooding Death was in front of him right now.
As much as its arrival was the result of Roel’s bait, it was also worth noting that Flooding Death had come of its own volition despite knowing that he was in possession of two Crown’s Stones. In a sense, this meant that it was confident in overcoming his abilities.
Roel stared at the pitch-black sky and patiently awaited Flooding Death’s move.
The elite guards around him hadn’t been idling around either. They began channeling all kinds of spells, charging up energies of all colors up to bombard the sky all at once. This was the greatest advantage humankind had over these terrifying monsters—teamwork and cooperation.
As intelligent as the Six Calamities were, they had never cooperated with one another. Most civilizations had been destroyed by a single calamity, and those who had crossed paths with more than one had never simultaneously encountered two calamities.
There had been many conjectures regarding this matter.
Some theorized that their powers conflicted with one another. Some wondered if the Six Calamities were incapable of communication amongst themselves. Regardless of the reason, this meant that Roel only had to focus on the enemy in front of him.
Thus, he decided to leave the offense to the Rosaian elites and focus on the defense himself. This would significantly lower his mana consumption, allowing him to stall until the arrival of the reinforcements.
To their astonishment, before they could unleash their spells, there was an unexpected attack coming from the distance.
A beam of white light fell from the sky, reminiscent of a sharp blade slicing through the night. Alarmed by the attack, the Rosaian elite magicians hurriedly redirected their spells to fend against the beam of white light.
The clash between the two forces resulted in a deafening explosion.
This sudden assault shocked Roel and the others. It was clear to them that the beam of white light was a coordinated army spell, meaning that the enemy was of a sizable scale. The aura coming from it had a sinister edge to it, suggesting that they were no ordinary transcendents.
The Rosaian guards turned their eyes toward the direction where the beam had come from. Moments later, after the white light had faded, a bunch of white-robed figures came into sight.
“Mother Goddess is gazing upon us!”
Roel’s face turned livid. He recognized the familiar phrase.
It was the Saints Convocation, an organization that had worshiped the Mother Goddess since the ancient era. He had crossed paths with it on several occasions in the Witness State. However, he didn’t think that they would actually work together with the Six Calamities to deal with him.
While the Saints Convocation and the Six Calamities were subordinate to the Mother Goddess, it didn’t necessarily mean that they were on good terms. For one, the Saints Convocation had sealed off Tempest Caller’s egg to its powers for their own. After how they had exploited the Six Calamities as tools, it was hard to imagine them actually joining hands together.
Not to mention, it was completely inconceivable to Roel that the Six Calamities could communicate with humans and even rally an army behind it.
But no matter how unbelievable the situation was, the situation was what it was.
With the Saints Convocation having launched their attack, the Rosaian guards quickly put up their defense. The barrier Roel had constructed using Time Devourer couldn’t fend against the Saints Convocation’s assault because he had to spread it thinly in order to protect everyone, which reduced its effects to an almost negligible degree.
Not to mention, if he had really concentrated the power of Time Devourer, he would siphon time away from not just his enemies but his allies as well. The ability was a double-edged sword.
The two armies soon came into contact and clashed with each other.
At this critical moment, Flooding Death started billowing.
…
From the moment the Saints Convocation launched its attack, Flooding Death had already started spreading itself around, reminiscent of a balled-up human stretching their limbs.
The sky looked as if it had transformed into a boundless abyss. Bubbling curses started dripping out in the form of black raindrops. When they fell onto the ground and seeped into the earth, Roel suddenly remembered the record stating that places touched by Flooding Death would turn into lands of death.
As expected, aberrations started to occur under the corruption of the curses.
How many corpses are buried under a plot of land?
That was not a question anyone could have given an accurate answer to, but Flooding Death was now presenting the correct answer to Roel in the most appalling manner.
Countless bodies started crawling out of the earth in the silence of the night. It wasn’t just deceased humans but demonic beasts, wild animals, and even ancient beings that had long disappeared from the face of the world.
These bodies were shrouded by a black cursed mist. They looked so fragile that it looked like they would shatter at a single touch, but through his Crown’s Stones, Roel knew that they were nothing more than mediums for the transmission of the curse.
Those who fought with these corpses and carcasses, regardless of whether they won or lost, would be devoured by the curse. There was no way to stop the transmission, and that was how entire civilizations eventually crumbled to Flooding Death.
It was only at this moment that Roel understood the core of Flooding Death’s existence—plague.
I’ll have to make a move now, Roel thought.
If he left these cursed corpses and carcasses to be, not only would the guards suffer heavy casualties, but the rapid increase in the concentration of the curse would also affect the auburn-haired woman sleeping in the carriage, worsening her condition.
He knew that he had to deal with Flooding Death, but the problem was that he couldn’t step away right now, not when Charlotte was lying vulnerable in the carriage behind him.
Furthermore, the guards weren’t faring well in their fight against the Saints Convocation.
Graced by the presence of their ‘God’s Envoy’, the evil cultists saw this as an opportunity for them to prove themselves to the Mother Goddess. They fought tenaciously like madmen who had no qualms dying here, believing that they would be rewarded as long as they brought down their enemies.
Their targets were clear here—Roel and Charlotte. If any of them breached the guards’ defense line, Charlotte would be in danger too. That was not something he dared to gamble on.
Just as Roel was at a loss as to what he should do, he suddenly felt familiar mana pulsations behind him, followed by the thunderous clopping of horse hooves.
“Are they finally here?” Roel murmured as he breathed a sigh of relief.
As the clopping grew louder, the knights on horseback slowly became visible in the night.
The towering Kurt was leading the pack, followed by Brittany, Geralt, Selina, Juliana, and Stuart. Trailing behind them were the elites from Knight Kingdom Pendor. These successors of ancient bloodlines possessed considerable strength without having an overly high Degree of Assimilation that would pique Flooding Death’s vigilance, making them perfect reinforcements here.
With his final layer of insurance in place, Roel was finally freed from his shackles.
His aura immediately changed as his golden eyes glowed like candlelight. He simultaneously manifested a humongous crimson skeleton around him while releasing a flood of frost aura. Without any warning, he dashed straight toward the black clump in the distance.
A thunderous roar boomed from the sky. Seemingly provoked by Roel’s aggression, the black clump started descending to the ground.
With this, the fight against the zealous evil cultists, an endless army of undead, and the pitch-black flooding waves of death finally commenced.
