Chapter 6: The Police

Although the voice was clear and melodious, to Chen Fan it sounded creepier than anything he had ever heard.

No matter how courageous you were, your response wouldn’t be any better than Chen Fan’s if you suddenly heard a shout in the middle of the night on a desolate beach.

“Bah, coward!” He heard a disdainful shout behind him. Chen Fan was about to abandon the eel’s bag and make a run for it.

Xie Xiaoya had had a bad day, and she was not in a good mood. At the police station that afternoon she had been lectured by her superior (who happened to be her father) for being so clumsy. Her father thought her paperwork, which was jotted down messier than a kid’s doodle and difficult to understand, was not good enough for a 22 year old.

To make matters worse, a thief on the bus stole her phone on the way home.

The thought of this afternoon’s theft made Xie Xiaoya flush.

She couldn’t muster up the courage to tell anyone that she lost her cell phone. She was a police officer after all! It was really embarrassing that a thief had stolen things out of her bag.

Technically, it was her fault. She should have worn her police uniform instead of the fancy new clothes that she had just bought from the mall.

That evening during dinner, she felt gloomier and unhappier every time she thought about the incident. She lied and told her parents that she was going to meet up with some old school friends. In the end, though, she went to the beach to relax. It was only a stone’s throw from her house.

As the saying goes, bad luck ruins everything.

Xie Xiaoya couldn’t agree more with that. Just as she was cheering up, she saw a man walking towards her in the distance. She planned to walk away and avoid any interaction, but then she caught sight of the long bag that the man was carrying.

The sky was dark and Xie Xiaoya couldn’t get a clear look at what was going on, but she began to feel uneasy.

She couldn’t help but think that the man fumbling on the beach in the middle of the night with a bag as tall as him might be a vicious murderer trying to hide the body. He might have come to the beach to fill the bag containing the dead body with stones and cast it into the sea to destroy the evidence.

Thinking about similar scenes in movies, Xie Xiaoya felt a lump in her throat and cold sweat on her palms.

While she was crazily imagining how she would intervene, the suspicious man unexpectedly let out an evil laugh and shouted, “Muahaha, to all the pretty ladies in Zhongyun, I, master Chen Fan, am about to become extremely wealthy and marry all of you one by one!”

Xie Xiaoya, who’s mood was quickly deteriorating again, could not wait to dash forward immediately, press him flat on the ground, and beat him up. Then, she might even strangle him alive, put him in a bag full of stones, and cast him into the sea after hearing Chen Fan speaking grandiloquently.

He definitely brings idiocy to a whole new level!

After hearing his pompous speech, Xie Xiaoya hated this man from the bottom of her heart.

Looking at this brainless coward, Xie Xiaoya was relieved that he didn’t seem like someone who had the courage to commit a murder. As a woman, if she ever happened to bump into a dangerous man, her small size would definitely put her at a disadvantage. However, as a police officer, how could she just stand by idly and act against her conscience if she met someone suspicious?

“What are you doing carrying a polybag that big to the beach in the middle of the night?” Although there was an indescribable fury that couldn’t be erased in the bottom of Xie Xiaoya’s heart, she controlled herself and did not pick up a stone to hit the guy.

“…Ah, s-so actually your not a ghost!”

When Chen Fan turned around, he saw that the person who scared him was a slim, fair, and gorgeous woman with a gracefully curved body. She was just shorter than he was.

“Y-y-you scared me!” Chen Fan’s face showed lingering fear and doubt. He stammered when he spoke, stroking his chest exaggeratedly.

He really couldn’t figure out why there was a woman as beautiful as any movie star standing in front of him. She had a sharp chin, slender legs like exquisite porcelain, and the tight white T-shirt she was wearing did nothing to hide her figure. Chen Fan thought foolishly that she was a mermaid who secretly came ashore to experience human life.

However, when he looked at her fair and clear face he saw exasperation, resentment, anger, and rage, Chen Fan’s heart skipped another beat. Did I say that out loud by any chance?

“Stop babbling. I’m a police officer, so hurry up and tell me what’s in the bag.” Xie Xiaoya wanted to get straight to the point instead of beating around the bush and wasting her time talking to this guy.

“Oh, police!” Chen Fan gazed at the goddess Xie Xiaoya and instantly thought of many special terms to describe her and her melodious voice. Even the word “police” sounded harmonic when describing her.

“You…you…”

Xie Xiaoya’s pretty face blushed as she pointed her thin fingers at Chen Fan’s face, trying to find a suitable word to scold the hideous guy in front of her. She was so angry she was struggling to think clearly.

His tone did not respect her position, and his expression was predatory. It was impossible for Xie Xiaoya to miss what was going through this guy’s head. She was young and pretty; the internet had taught her all she need to know about guys like him.

Seeing that the pretty policewoman was about to burst with anger, Chen Fan quickly came up with a reason to interrupt.

“Officer, there is only an eel in my bag. I kept it for half a year and it grew too big. It can’t fit in the fish tank anymore, so I am going to release it back to the sea.”

“Eel? You are here in the middle of the night to release an eel?” Xie Xiaoya asked with complete disbelief.

“Yup, that’s absolutely right. I have school during the day and don’t have much spare time, so I had to come during the night,” Chen Fan replied while untying the string on the plastic bag, revealing the electric eel.

“Eh?” it was not like Xie Xiaoya imagined, so she went to have a closer look. “Why is your eel so fat?”

Her night vision was quite poor, so Xie Xiaoya could only faintly see a blurry black figure through the semi-transparent plastic bag. However, her instincts told her that there was something fishy about this “eel”.

“Uh, I think it’s quite fat too, that’s why I’m about to release it back into the sea. This fellow can no longer fit in the fish tank.”

“Hum!”

After staring at Chen Fan for a while and seeing that he was still letting out a silly sort of smile, Xie Xiaoya, who was a little embarrassed, gave a snort, stamped her foot and turned and began to walk away.

“That scared the hell out of me!” Looking at the beautiful officer’s graceful figure, Chen Fan mused, “But then…she is damn hot! Whoever has the chance to marry her should be extremely pleased!”

Xie Xiaoya, who was already some distance away, suddenly turned and looked back. Although he did not speak loudly, somehow she managed to hear his words crystal clear.

Xie Xiaoya felt like she was about to explode in fury as her anger rose up. Her fair face blushed and turned green. She even started to have difficulty breathing.

She clenched her teeth, turned around, stared sharply at Chen Fan, and decided to imprint the look of this guy in her mind.

She decided secretly in her heart that if one day she caught this guy commiting a crime, she would make sure he knew the meaning of true “pleasure”.
