“Little Ru!” Jin Renguang cried out as the door closed behind him.
Ru Meiqi was sitting on his comfy chair which could rotate 360 degrees while facing the floor to ceiling window. As a qualified person with OCD[1], Jin Renguang’s office was spotless with the scent of air freshener in the air, totally unlike the unkempt and haggard image that the rest of the detectives showed. Every single thing on the table was placed precisely with exact calculation and the reports, files and books were filed and displayed neatly by year and the case’s name.
Usually, he would strangle the people who tried to invade his personal space yet right now, there was only joy and exhilaration on his face.
Jin Renguang was very well built with a body full of compact muscles. He towered over people with height over 1.93 meters. Nine out of ten people would feel intimidated being in the same room as he was because of his occupational habit, every time he met someone, he couldn’t help but to scrutinize them deeply even though they weren’t criminals.
Ru Meiqi turned the chair around and looked at Jin Renguang with her unfocused eyes and deadpan face. “I told you countless times not to call me like that.”
Jin Renguang didn’t care though. “Why didn’t you call me?” The towering man looked especially aggrieved as he demanded. “I said that I will pick you up at the station!”
“You’re busy.”
“I’m not.” Then, he thought of how he had been running around all day and corrected his words. “Even if I am, I can make time for you.”
Ru Meiqi averted her gaze. “I don’t need you to.”
“Well, okay.” Jin Renguang laughed openly and sat on the sofa. “How about it? Is China nicer than the United States? I thought you would not come back anymore…” The last sentence was spoken in a quiet murmur but because of the quietness, Ru Meiqi could hear it loud and clear.
She replied calmly. “The food there isn’t authentic enough.”
Jin Renguang raised one brow in amusement. “You come back just for food?”
“What’s wrong with food?” With a tone full of righteousness, Ru Meiqi argued. “Food is a necessary thing for human beings. Without food, we can’t live and without good food, we can’t feel happy and without happiness, we will fall sick and die. So, to preserve my life, I’d rather return here.”
Jin Renguang: “…” Logical enough, can’t refute that.
He knew that he wouldn’t win in any argument against Ru Meiqi nor did he wish for victory. He was already happy to find her presence here. Without any further ado, he asked. “Have you visited the hospital?”
Ru Meiqi nodded. “I went there before coming here.”
“What do you think of Butterfly?”
Ru Meiqi pondered for a moment. The sun shone down on her figure, casting a golden glow on her silhouette. Jin Renguang stared intently at the petite woman and if intensity could be materialized, then Ru Meiqi’s body would have been riddled with holes right now.
“I like her,” she said.
“Oh?” Jin Renguang reacted, intrigued. “It is rare for you to be so subjective.”
“Am I?”
“Yeah, do you remember your first impression of me?” As if immersing in a happy nostalgia, Jin Renguang started to narrate. “In one glance, I can see that you lack love very much. You dress your uniform sloppily yet the belt, shoes and watch you wear are branded. You are not stupid, you can clearly get into class A but you deliberately skip classes and get into fights, getting you into class E. All of that proves that you want to attract attention and for a teenager like us, especially a raging walking hormone dispenser like you, the thing that you want to attract is either a girl or parents but judging from your personality, I am inclined toward the latter.”
He smiled proudly. “How about it?”
Ru Meiqi snorted. “You’d rather use your brain capacity to remember my nonsense words from years ago rather than memorizing cases?”
“Of course, every single thing you said, I remember them clearly even if they are nonsense.” He laughed. “There’s one thing I am curious about though, do you still think I lack love?”
Ru Meiqi squinted her eyes. “No, the thing you lack is security.”
Instead of being offended, Jin Renguang calmly admitted. “Hmm, that’s right. A certain someone abandoned me for work and didn’t care for me enough, that’s why I turned out like this.”
“Is it my fault now?”
“Did I say that it’s you?”
“Who else would it be if not me?”
“Ooh~” Jin Renguang deliberately dragged his tone, his eyes bright and teasing. “So you still have the face to admit it?”
Ru Meiqi rolled her eyes and didn’t want to pay him any attention anymore. But a certain furry bear was restless as he approached her slowly, taking his time to appreciate her whole. He loved her, loved her sassiness, her courage, her deadpan face, her strange eyes, her blunt words, every single one of it was endearing and lovable, he couldn’t get enough.
He leaned forward and put his hands on the back of the chair and the table, caging her within his embrace. His breath caressed her ears as he whispered in his deep mellow voice. “Say, should I arrest you for being guilty?”
Ru Meiqi didn’t buy any of it as she spat out. “Stop your nonsense.”
He chuckled and the next second, his collar was grabbed and yanked down. He obediently offered his face and let the woman kiss him.
[1] OCD = Obsessive-compulsive Disorder. Captain Jin’s symptoms; fear of contamination and dirt, and need things to be symmetrical and orderly.. There are another symptoms more severe like aggressive, self harm etc but don’t worry because Captain Jin has strong self control.
