Shane was about to complain to Uncle Lars but his uncle merely wished him good luck before he abruptly ended the call.
‘YOU!!!’ he wanted to punch his uncle, even though it wouldn’t hurt him, as he glared at the young man next to him.
“You heard your Marshall, right??” Seeing the black-haired youth in front of him, the young man’s eyes trembled in fear, as he involuntarily stepped back.
‘Why did I have to meet such a big-shot on my first beast-tide as a troop-leader? How can someone be as unlucky as I am?’
However, even though he complained inwardly, he hesitantly answered.
“Yes, I heard Marshall Kriez… ” before he announced with a loud voice, supported with a little bit of mana.
“The young man next to me will take charge of the whole unit. Everyone who disregards his order will have to face severe military punishment!”
While the young man next to him said so, Shane decided to take a step forward and push his chest out a little to exude confidence.
“Hello everyone, my name is Shane and I’m the person in charge now! If you guys follow my instructions, almost everyone will survive, UNDERSTOOD??” He announced in a crystal clear voice with mana amplifying it so that it echoed throughout the shelter wall.
The soldiers nearby were astonished to hear the voice bouncing off the walls. They had been busy shooting their opponents with their long-range weapons when they noticed a teenager in a very fine and elegant black robe standing next to their prior leader in charge.
But based on the first few words spoken by this black-haired teenager, most soldiers immediately noticed that Shane wasn’t an ordinary youth. To them, he appeared to either be a descendant of someone in the military, a noble, or something similar. Shane radiated a thick aura that commanded respect as if it was normal for him to lead others.
The other possibility was that Shane was merely acting as if he was a bigshot. However, it would be a ridiculous conclusion because they felt the pressure around them immediately increase when Shane spoke. They had felt such pressure only when they were around some of the highest authorities which made them take the teenager in front of them seriously.
As if on cue, a few soldiers shouted out “UNDERSTOOD!” without knowing that they did.
Shane smiled lightly, as he took a deep breath in order to calm down his excitement, as he instructed in a loud and commanding voice.
“For my first instruction, I want everyone to calm the F**K down!? What the hell do you guys think you’re doing? If you want to die, just jump down the wall and fall on your head! Don’t obstruct your comrades and focus on your accuracy instead!”
Hearing him, some soldiers immediately assumed the ‘at attention’ stance and Shane smiled, thinking that it was relatively easy to overwhelm inexperienced soldiers with the harsh truth.
There were still quite a few nervous soldiers, but they would have to adapt themselves with time. Focusing on the issues at hand, he spoke again.
“Right now, we have to face two beast-tides at the same time but the crystal feathered eagles are the most problematic issue for us archers!
Apprentice stage archers and crossbowmen focus on the flock of Wild-stage crystal feathered eagles for the moment.
Expert Archers-take care of the Elite-stage eagles.
The remaining crossbowmen fire at the Elite earth and fiery scaled lizards first! Everyone at the ballistae takes care of the awakened scaled lizards except the aqueous scaled lizard. The damage they cause to the wall is almost negligible.”
Hearing him, everyone nodded their heads in unison, while they began to follow Shane’s instructions.
The young man who had been in charge before Shane took over, hadn’t given them specific instructions on what their target areas should be. They had been clueless and without a strategy to battle their opponents which was almost like a self-inflicted death sentence. However, after hearing Shane’s battle strategy, the soldiers felt more secure and even a little hopeful.
The whole process, per se, wasn’t anything special, but with Shane’s aura, it was much easier to force everyone into following him.
A few minutes passed and his presence and continued instructions eased the soldiers. His words and his commanding voice seemed to infuse them with confidence as they were able to rid themselves of the tension. Slowly but steadily, the horde of beasts began to diminish slightly.
After he gave out his first orders, he also instructed the young man next to him to search for Leo, because he required the messenger crystal.
The young man spotted Leo ascending the stairs, who was astonished to see Shane. Leo was about to shout at him when he noticed Shane issue detailed instructions to the soldiers to help them refine their hunting process.
“What?!” He mumbled, as the prior leader in charge answered with a sigh “Just let it be… Give him the messenger crystal…”
Hesitating a bit, Leo did as his superior said. He approached Shane, who spoke to him in a commanding voice.
“Are you a snail or a sloth? Be quick, if you don’t want your comrades to die!”
He shouted, causing Leo to think ‘How did his attitude change so fast?’ But Leo followed the instruction nonetheless, handing the messenger crystal to Shane before stepping back.
“Now go to the dimensional portal and tell the new Archers and Crossbowmen to come up to the northern wall.
The close combat regiment should gather at the northern gate and prepare themselves to charge out of the shelter when I say so!
Immediately notify me if any of the new soldiers have a tamer or special occupation.”
Shane ordered before he turned back to the prior leader, and said
“Common close combat units don’t use wind rider horses, right?… If a troop with wind rider horses appears, notify me! I hope you are familiar with their emblem. Their horses are stored within beast sealing cards and you can’t instantly perceive them!”
When he had finished giving out the order to the two baffled young men, Shane channeled mana into the messenger stone. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed that the two men were still staring at him.
“Are your feet rooted into the ground? GO!”
Somehow Shane felt good to order everyone around, even though it was only because of his ties to the Marshall.
‘Somehow it’s a hassle, but I like it, huh?’ He thought, smiling lightly.
Nevertheless, he had to help, because it seemed like the higher-ranked militaries had left the shelter in order to clear the Wolf den.
In the end, they had made a huge mistake by underestimating their opponents’ wits, even though it was hard to tell if his prediction about the bloodlust thunder wolf’s intelligence was spot-on.
The shelter wall seemed to fend off all crystal feathered eagles extremely well, considering that their whole order seemed to be a mess but that was mainly because not a single awakened-stage eagle had shown up yet.
There were lots of casualties that could have been prevented, but Shane couldn’t help but think that his leadership might be able to help out with that!
Meanwhile, the wall itself bore multiple holes, causing wind blades and other attacks to go straight past the wall and demolish the buildings standing behind the massive shelter wall.
The situation seemed to be under control for now. Considering the fact that Shane’s small unit had only begun to work properly over the last few minutes, their efficiency had increased to a large degree.
It was still not good enough in his opinion, but he had to accept it for the moment. At the moment, briefing the main soldier unit outside the shelter was far more important.
He saw other soldiers rushing towards him and his new soldiers unit, while a few Warriors and other close combat occupationists began to gather at the northern gate.
‘Wall! You have to endure a few more minutes, okay? You’re not allowed to collapse!’ Shane repeated in his mind, trying not to say it out loud because it would distract the soldiers. The messenger crystal finally connected to its counterpart and he was subjected to the deafening sounds emanating from the other messenger crystal
It was a giant melee of voices that were hard to distinguish from one another. He immediately heard loud roars, sounds of thunder clashing on metal, and the horrible shrieks of humans and beasts that cried in pain.
Before he could speak, an angry voice asked him, “WHAT NOW?! If there is nothing important I’ll hang up!! The thunder wolf initiated a surprise attack while we retreated!”
