Damien was equally disgusted as well and mumbled, “Could this possibly be the outside world. Is someone trying to tell us something by showing this?”
Reva looked at Damien with raised brows, feeling that it could be the case.
However, if it was true and the outside world was a place filled with pain and despair, then wouldn’t it be suicide to go out?
Wasn’t the safest place still their home, the Rising Sun Continent itself? Weren’t the things they were seeing a warning to not try to go out?
However, suddenly their surroundings dissolved back into pitch-black darkness, and before Damien and Reva could figure out what to do, a faint white light began to glow in the darkness.
The light grew big enough to form the figure of a man in his fifties, and his entire being looked ethereal as if he was not real. His face was expressionless, though one could see that he was quite the valiant man when he was alive.
Damien and Reva became wary as they put their guard up upon seeing this strange figure of a man.
“Do not be worried. I am just a soul memory that was left behind by my true self, Anton Vahn. And since I am just a memory, whoever you are, wouldn’t be able to interact with me but can only listen to whatever I am going to say. So please calm down and do not worry about getting out of this place. I will teleport you back to where you came from,” Anton said in a monotonous tone.
Damien and Reva glanced at each other as they focused on what the man was going to say. However, they couldn’t help but feel astonished since Anton was none other than the leader of the survivors who came to the Rising Sun Continent!
And if he was capable of even leaving behind a soul memory, they could only imagine how powerful he was when he was alive. Damien was sure this guy was definitely way more powerful than even Ruthren!
“What you just saw were my memories of the outside world or the world you had no idea existed until one of my descendants told you the truth. I don’t know how many years have passed if you are watching this, but the reason you are even here is that I created the barrier in such a way that it will choose the one most potential and talent to venture outside this barrier and help us take back our home from the Ghouls, which is what we call for those humans and living beings that turned into those evil abominations. They only evolve and get stronger as the years pass, as you all must have seen, and the worst part is how extremely cruel and ruthless they can be. All they can see and think about is devouring our flesh and blood. And for that, they are willing to go to any extent,” As Anton explained, his expression didn’t change, but Damien felt as if he could feel the intense anger and sadness hidden in his voice.
Reva was surprised that they were brought here because they were chosen to venture outside? Anton seemed to be addressing only a single person, but Reva felt that Anton never expected both of them to be chosen.
Still, she felt that she and Damien were nowhere near ready to face these abominations or ‘Ghouls’ outside, especially when they aren’t even powerful enough yet to take care of their problems in the Rising Sun Continent.
Just that image of the Ghoulish dragon was enough to make her feel immense apprehension. She had read ancient books on dragons and how they were one of the strongest races among ethereal beasts.
Even Yohr had dragon blood inside him, and she could still remember how close she was to dying when fighting Yohr, despite the fact that he was immensely weakened.
“I know you might feel afraid or worried about venturing out, thinking that you are not ready. But fret not, I won’t force you to go out if you don’t want to. But all I can request is that you pass on your wisdom and skills down to someone who would want to venture out and bring him here to see if they are capable enough to go out. The reason why I want someone to lead the people here outside is that our true home is not this small continent but the world outside. The only reason me and my people came here was not to survive but to rebuild and gather enough resources to again venture out and save our people stuck outside and retake our home by getting rid of the Ghouls. But alas…we became too comfortable here and forgot about the true purpose we came here. And now I have no choice but to leave this dangerous yet noble mission to our descendants.”
Reva’s eyes narrowed as she heard his words and could sympathize with her ancestor, who always wanted to save his home but died without being able to fulfill that mission.
“We also don’t know how things outside are now if they have become better or even worse. Or if anybody is even alive at all. Sigh…I wish I had done more when I was alive instead of burdening my descendants with my responsibility. Still, since the barrier chose you, I want you to think about what I said about going out instead of giving up outright. Anyway, you people can’t stay on this continent forever. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even ask you to risk your life or the lives of others.”
“What does he mean by saying that we can’t stay forever on this continent?” Damien whispered to Reva, who shook her head, having no idea. But she felt that this was indeed something to be very concerned about, even though they had no idea why her ancestor said that.
“This is all I have to say for now.. So answer me with a simple Yes or No on whether you want to go outside the barrier…now…” Anton said, his gaze staring at the pitch-black darkness.
